ANY SAGE ADVICE?

My favorite sister is new to iris & I've attached her note to me. I'm hoping to get her
hooked on THE best flower and I'm beginning to see the signs...let's keep her interest!)

I'll forward any advice you have in regards to her questions. She's consumed by her
small business and doesn't have much time. BUT she has a lovely, large yard (Zone 7 on
Eastern Shore in Maryland) Thanks ahead of time for any tips you might share on
cultivating. I've bragged to her about how nice you all are, not to mention
knowledgeable! And thanks for the prompt aphid reply, John!

Here's her note (P.S. her name is Jean.)
>>>>>>>>From Jean:
About my iris - this is the first year I've ever noticed them. I've got
two bunches - some very special ones from you and some ordinary purple ones
from a friend. They are just gorgeous this year - but I've never
touched them. The ordinary ones have no bugs but are planted in concrete
hard hard dirt. The others that you gave me, by the barn, have much better
soil BUT the chickens pick them to pieces. One is a butterscotch color,
not tan exactly, maybe cinamon. Spectacular. I cut some today for the
kitchen and the smell fabulous. I've cut some more (mainly buds) and will
take in tomorrow. I worry that they'll tip over in the car & crush.

Can I transplant the ones by the barn to a safer spot? When and how do I
that? Should I fertilize, mulch, do anything to them?
