Hi!
In a recent trip out to Muncie, IN to visit my family (and celebrate the end
of school) my husband and I visited several iris folks including the Millers
in Ossian, IN and their neighbor Brian Wendel. Later on I visited Jack
Norrick. Both Jack and Brian mentioned that their favorite source for
Louisiana irises is a lady named Melody up in Kansas, IL. Apparently she
gives very nice divisions and the plants are already cold hardy so they do
quite well in cold, windy Indiana gardens. I would love to get the address
of this person, particularly since Mt. Gretna Gardens has closed so I don't
have a nearby source for Louisianas anymore. The way I figure it, if it
grows in IN, it will do okay for me (and everything I've purchased from Jack
Norrick or dug up from my mom's garden has grown beautifully for me). Can
anyone help with this?
As a side note, on this same trip I did some serious iris buying. I owed my
mom some plants for her birthday so I bought her some DOROTHEA K.
WILLIAMSON), VOODOO DANCER (I think that's the name), DIXIE DEB and
something that is probably versicolor. For myself I bought some WHEELHORSE,
PINK JOY ROBERTS, and PETITE AND SWEET. All of these but the DOROTHEA K.
WILLIAMSON were from Brian Wendel's garden--D.K.W was from Miller's Manor.
According to Brian Wendel, whose garden is nearly all Louisianas, he has
very good luck with introductions by Chowning, Rowlan and Morgan. Irises
developed by these hybridizers thrive despite the harsh cold winds that whip
across his front yard. Indiana also has fairly dry cold winters so these
plants put up with a lot of punishment without much snow protection. When I
was at Miller's Manor I also bought myself some typholia and some lactea. I
didn't buy anything from Jack Norrick this time, but I really enjoyed
walking around his garden and talking.
Hope your gardens look great!
Heather
