Not to worry about the black pots overheating . . . as long as you are
careful about watering AND drainage. I have had bearded iris in such
pots on a southwest facing concrete patio for more than two years . . .
I have to separate the iris after this year's bloom . . . and not lost a
single plant. They have blossomed profusely. Granted they bloom better
in the ground but the potted iris will bloom. I have transferred some
of them to half whiskey/wine barrels (wooden) and the still thrive.
Summertime temps around here reach 100 degrees + during the day and, I
suspect, more than that on the concrete patio. Haven't ever measured
temp . . . probably becasue I don't want to kow!
