Kali,
I grow Howdy Do and Whoop Em Up here in southern New Mexico.  They did 
weel in potd for a year then in the ground in my garden.  The soil is 
old river bottom with clay and sand underlaiment (Is that how you 
spell that?)  You did say where you live, but our climate is HOT 
summers and mild to cold winters.
