Blue Flax is a very short lived perennial. If it makes it to 4 years, it's
ancient. It will self-seed abundantly if not deadheaded, so you can either
let it die out, or be pulling hundreds of little flaxlets from between your
rhizomes. The babies transplant quite easily. I've moved them all over the
place. It seems to be indestructible when young, and extremely fragile when
old.
It's not ajuga (my iris weed nemesis), but isn't something I'd deliberately
plant near iris.
