I have a wildflower which volunteers that may be Blue Flax ( that was
one of the components of the mixture ) It gets about 18" high or more with many
small blue/white flowers, The seed heads are round and the plant itself is
somewhat vase shaped (wider at the top than the bottom. It is very prolific and
can easily shade/smother its smaller neighbors, I am not going to let it grow
among the Iris in the future.
In an earlier post someone mentioned crocosmia, I am happy to say that
so far Crocosmia hyb. Lucifer has been a good neighbor, its leaves come up
during Iris bloom time and it flowers in mid summer (no stalks yet here). I
would avoid the orange/yellow Chasmanthe (sometimes called crocosmia) which
grows like a weed here.
Another well behaved "edge" plant which blooms almost all the time in
mild climates is the Scabiosa hyb. (Butterfly Blue and Pink Mist) which stays
low and spreads slowly with many flowers held 12" high on thin leafless stems.
These guys will never shade out their neighbors.
