Hi, Steve--
Most people cut the stalk because it looks neater, but there are those who
don't on the grounds that it will provide more nutrients for the rhizome. Not
that they are "draining back" into the rhizome, but that stalk is still full
of chloroplasts that are busy turning sunlight into sugars even without
leaves. This can be really helpful if your rhizome has bloomed out, in which
case the stalk may be all the poor plant has to photosynthesize with. But
make sure the stalk is cut just above a node, or rain is liable to enter the
cut end and cause rot which will then travel right down the stalk to the
rhizome.
Barb, in Santa Fe, and I didn't really answer your question, did I?

Hello Everyone,
I need advice on whether I should let the bloomstalks dry on the rhizomes
or cut them off at the base. On one hand it seems that the nutrients in the
stalk will drain (go) back into the mother rhizome. On my other hand it
seems that the bloomstalk is sucking the life out of the mother rhizome
because she is trying to keep it alive!
. Thanks,
Steve
P.S. I enjoy pruning.
