LOL at all the serious(?) explanations to Dennis, that his STEPPING OUT is,
infact not. Me thinks Dennis was having a 'leg pull' there.
Dennis, I believe places like Walmart sort the rhizomes according to colour,
before packaging. They have several bins labelled something like this:
STEPPING OUT: anything blue, or close to blue, purple, etc
VANITY: anything vaguely pink, mauve, orange, etc
DARKSIDE: anything black, red, brown, or blue with darker spots, etc.
WEDDING VOW: Anything white, pale yellow, etc. you get the idea.
The bicoloured ones (like yours) are probably thrown vaguely in the
direction of the bins, and where they land they stay.
Now this system works well for them. They put the picture of the named iris
(or something fairly close, at least close to the colour of the named iris)
on the packet, put them in the shops at inflated prices just before winter,
when it's far to late to plant them. When they are dead, or nearly dead,
they lower the price.
Sometimes rz's get chucked into the wrong colour bin, but that hardly
matters, since the chances of getting a correctly labeled rz are extremely
remote.
Now, anyone care to explain to Dennis what a plicata is?? :-)
Jan Clark, Australia, waiting for the first K-mart TB packets to appear in
stores, in a month or so.
