Hi Betty,
"Sweeter Than Wine" doesn't do well in the St. Louis area. I try and steer
away from using iris that are finicky. On the other hand "Silverado" has been
a great parent sends good substance, branching, hardiness & plant vigor.
One iris I would like to see used more in hybridizing is "Kingly Dignity" by
Dave Niswonger. I am using both of these iris often but I believe it has a
lot more to offer than what I alone can do.
Tip: For those of you just starting to hybridize here in the midwest here's a
tip...Buy and start at least 4 clumps for the simple reason if you don't you
will have to wait extra years to backcross to the parents. Here in the
midwest setting pods zap the strength then if we have a bad winter you will
most likely lose the iris. By using 4 clumps you can use one for pod setting
leaving the others alone. Once you accumalate a few seedlings you will be
using or 3 of these clumps. Plus you may want to use one or the other parent
for making other crosses because you find out it's a great parent.
Want to thank the Oklahoma clubs for having a wonderful convention. This was
my first but diffently not my last!!!
