Re: TB: 'mart irises , other babbles

From: Chris Darlington <chris.darlington@sympatico.ca>

Hi Folks,
While we're on the subject of mart irises , I just thought I'd mention
that Walmart had a nice selection of rhizomes for sale in very
attractive small boxes , my son and I immediately started flinging them
into the shopping cart until I decided that it would probably be a good
idea to inspect a few of them first. This mini investigation proved
very fruitful as each and every rhizome inspected was rotten ! The
brand name was Plant Smart , beware ! If you can't see it , don't buy
it.
Our quest for quality irises led us to a rather large garden center
called Les Gardins Dion . We stood perplexed in the perennial section
wondering where the irises were , only to find them indoors under a
table in almost darkness , to my amazement some of them had stocks about
to bloom on them , but only four inch fans ! Finding this a little too
weird , we chose BABBLING BROOK and SUPERSTITION in four inch pots and
will hope for bloom in July.
Last thing , Does anybody grow a cyan TB called LAKE PLACID ?
My rhizome is just sitting there , not rotting nor increasing , it has
had a 1 inch fan for a month now .
Oh yes , one other thing , last year the unknowns from my Mother's
patch had very smooth fans in texture , this year the fans are heavily
veined and wrinkled and are twice as thick. As they did not bloom last
year, can I interpret this as a good sign and expect a bloom after a
decade of none ? Hope so !!! I am personally getting envious of
hearing everybody boast of magnificent blooms.
All of this iris talk before bed is being processed into some mighty
surreal dreams at night. I wonder if I'm going mad or something.

	Thanks
	Christopher Darlington
