What has worked for me is to dig up the single rhizome, leave most of the
stem and leaves on and replant in another location. The bloomouts usually
have no living roots so digging them is safe - the lack of roots seems to be
part of the problem. The action of replanting may disturb the rhizome
similar to nicking. Every year I have bid on toes and such at our auction
and I get good growth on most of them by planting them in a nursery bed with
sandy potting soil kept moist. Once they get going I transplant them back
into the garden.
