Hi Jim:
No crucifixion here - you pose an interesting question. But it shouldn't
dissuade you from buying new irises - or even (gasp) buying what YOU like.
The reason the older irises win awards is because of the requirements of the
award system. They have to have been in commerce for a number of years, and
then worked their way up through the awards - until they are eligible for the
top prize. Just by requirement, a brand new iris can't win a judges award.
Then there's supply and distribution...... the older the iris, the more of it
there are... and the more have been distributed and into the hands of the
non-judge folks who vote the symposium.
Same is true of shows...... it's simply a matter of what's out there and
what's blooming on the day of the show.
I buy a few new irises every year. As a judge, it's required ---- but my
reasons are more a reflection of my obsessive/possessive personality than any
rule. I go to these conventions, see - and then I become aware that I can
hardly draw another breath unless I own this iris or that iris.
And then there is the 'cold spring, glass of wine, great iris description'
scenerio. I can't be expected NOT to buy something under those cimcumstances.
I hope I answered the question.
Kathy Guest - who saw a PICTURE of a black siberian at the convention (shown
by John White) and practically shook poor Shirley Pope in my frenzy to buy
one... wrote a check on the spot and it's in the Stately Guest Estates
already.
