Sounds like a pretty good bet (as good as any I've heard yet!) that slow germination is a genetic trait.
I've just come up from the garden where I've finally seen I.missouriensis seed planted 2 years ago popping up like little weeds. A different strain of I.missouriensis, treated the same way and planted last fall is already up and running.
One SDB seedling plot is still coughing up a few seedlings 6 years after the first shot up and I'm still waiting on a few seeds while seeds from another cross all germinated within the first two years.
It's been my experience that an extra year or two wait is worth it if the cross is special.
However...... For those in a hurry who plan to use the seedlings as a bridge to somewhere else, there's a lot to be said for breeding with an eye toward rapid germination. :)
