Re: CULT: BSP - Final 1999 Indicators List

From: "Jeff and Carolyn Walters" <jcwalters@bridgernet.com>

Hello Talk-ers and BSPers,

At last we have the final version of the Indicators' List for the Bloom
Sequence Project! Sorry for what turned out to be an unavoidable delay in
combining the input from the discussion group at the AIS Convention with
the Provisional List and the email comments thereon.

Herewith the List (added cultivars in caps):

  * (H)=chosen as a representative Historic indicator

Our aim was to have about six cultivars in each class (not counting
Historics) that were expected to be reliable indicators of mid-season bloom
for their class. There were a few classes where we never received as many
as six nominations, and I did allow us to go one over on TBs. Other
considerations that went into selecting the final indicators were genetic
diversity (not too many from the same hybridizer) and even color class -
there were four blacks or near blacks nominated in the TB class, for
example, and it didn't seem appropriate to use them all.

Where do we go from here? All BSP collaborators need to collect the date of
first bloom on the cultivars among these indicators that they are growing,
as well as the beginning and ending dates for the bloom season for each
class of irises that they grow, as was discussed and detailed when we set
up the outlines for the Bloom Sequence Project. At the end of your bloom
season you should email this information to me, and I will collate and
summarize it and post it to the BSP page that John Jones has offered to
make available to us on his website.

We also should be thinking about any additional observations we should be
making that might help explain the variations between locations that
undoubtedly will occur. The obvious factor that comes to mind is weather
conditions. What are the critical aspects of weather that affects bloom
performance and how can we characterize them in a concise and consistent
manner? Something to think about!

Happy Irising!
