I ran across something similar to this several years ago. I had around a
hundred pots to fill that fall (around 1991 or 92) and changed brands of
potting soil at 42. Kept records of the change--beyond this I had used a
K-Mart special. When the seedlings got about an inch high the ones in the
'special' soil started to burn at the tips and quit growing. I thought I had
over fertilized until I went back to my notes. The difference was obvious.
Not a preemergent, but something that stunts growth. I tried rinsing them
over and over, but with no luck. It took a year before they got enough
growth to line out.
