garden clean up

From: rod suchy <ras357@juno.com>

Boy I feel like the morning after one BIG party!! We just finished
removing bloom stalks in the garden.
It's been 3 days of pure bliss....ha ha ha. With the recent rains the
stalk has a lot of moisture in it, in fact when removed, the water runs
out of the end. We had to cut off most stalks because of this, but
where the plants were dryer they could be snapped off quite well. We
started a pile with the spent stalks and when we were done, the gigantic
pile could almost be called a mountain. My mountain now is 3 feet by 3
feet...and 6 feet tall!!! Yes 6 feet tall!! And we thought the bloom
season was just average......
One thing that is different this year, probably due to the high moisture
in the Iris, is that some of the bloom stalks turned MUSHY from the
bloom.....down to the rhizome? This I have never witnessed this before.
The slimmey stalks had an odor BUT not the usual ROT odor, and the
rhizome is solid.
So everyone have a safe MEMORIAL DAY and remember those who are not with
us any longer!!
Some of the best Iris people have long gone. And I for one, learned a
lot from them!!
