Linda, our row cover is plastic filled with fine holes that somehow let water and air through but keep heat in and cold out. Regular plastic sheeting won't do a thing. I get mine from the local nurseries. I don't remember if Home Depot has it or not. I think they do sometimes.

The long, hot fall has been good for our newly planted irises though. They are all growing beautifully.

Oops, clipped this & forgot who posted...anyway, Reemay is a synthetic
material that is non-woven, but porous, unlike plastic sheeting. Not
sure if your 'plastic' row cover is the same or not. Reemay is like
that fibrous stuff used as backing in sewing collars etc. Looks
identical.
