Donald, relax. I should have put 'here' in that paragraph. I used to line them
out in the spring when I lived in Texas, too, but in Mississippi even
those with just a smidgen of aril ancestry want to go dormant right
after transplanting, some a little later. Then it turns very hot,
they do go dormant, and I don't seem them again. Summer rainshowers
must cause them to rot when they want to be dry.
About dying or damping off in pots, granular Terrachlor is the
best thing to prevent that. Put it in your seed soil mix and after
the seeds germinate, sprinkle more on top occasionally, and they'll
survive.

Get some wooden shingles and build teepees over the transplants you lined out.
This protects the newly-set plant from heat and helpt to retain
moisture. Be careful in moving around the hoses because you can
knock over the shingles and they'll have to be reset. You can tacky
up your garden, too, with all of those shingles.
There is no pat answer, liviing in areas of extreme heat as we do
- yours hot and dry and mine hot and humid.
