Did you check the sheath of the rhizome by removal of a few outer
leaves to see if this was a visable ring or the top of a purple rhizome? 

I believe I have noted an occasional "Ring" on a few plants, usually
on plants received in mail but have never noted any consistency ie:
all plants in a clump showing ring but not PBF or PR. any
clarification on this would be nice. Also any photos.
