You could fertilize the plants with a 0-10-10 formula now, and after 
the first hard freeze (several days at 28 degrees or below) mulch the 
rhizomes with about 1 to 2 in. soil to help prevent heaving.  As soon 
as you see new growth in spring, remove the dirt.  Also, give the 
plants a spring pick-me-up with a fertilizer of 8-37-11 (or something 
close).
