Janet, I'm very eager to see how that strategy works for you.  I, too, 
have had cvs that rotted so badly I was sure they were entirely dead and 
gone but later magically put up new increases.  Unfortunately, my 
experience with those was that the new increases generally repeated the 
rot cycle the subsequent spring.  Within a couple years, those cvs fade 
away entirely.  You may very well have better luck than I, however, 
because you are in a bit milder climate.  Perhaps your babies will have 
enough time to grow adequately to insure their winter survival and 
ultimately acclimate to your growing conditions.  I hope so.  If you are 
successful in acclimating some of these newer TBs to your climate, I'll 
look forward to working out a trade to see if your tough moderns can hack 
it even farther north.  ;-)
