TB:Trivia

I've been spending most of my days planting irises. Gives a person lots of
time to think about irises. Especially the irises one is planting!

SKATING PARTY. I must have 2 dozen rhizomes of this thing to plant. I've
left it till last cause there is so much of it and I see it as a good backdrop
for more flashy irises! Still, I couldn't help remembering the first two times
I planted it! It just rotted away. Then I bought it a third time and
walla!!!! It's grown like a cocklebur <wild and woolly> ever since. And I've dug
chunks of this out for rhizome sales over the 5 years it was in that spot.

HONKY TONK BLUES. This one hadn't produced any great stalks in the past
couple of years and I thought it had nearly disappeared on me. Still, there was
over a dozen rhizomes. Guess it hung in there better than I thought. Good to
see since it's a pet of mine, having given me my first "Queen of Show!"
(Yeah, I know but old habits die hard!) Made me go check on some seedlings that
have this as a parent.

BORN TO EXCEED. Roger Nelson. This usually grows great too! An all time
favorite of mine. Did it medal? I can't remember. If not, it should have.

PROUD TRADITION and others of it's class . . . these have grown a lot better
than I expected considering past conversations. I was both thrilled and
surprised when I saw how many of these rhizomes I've accumulated. I'd be hard put
to think of one I like better. Also have and like CROSS CURRENT, STRICTLY
BALLROOM, GLISTENING ICICLE, and STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. And BORN TO EXCEED, but I'm
not sure it's in the same class.

YELLOWS. Most of the ones I have are rebloomers. Got a few more from the
Big Dig.

RHIZOMES. The best rhizomes came from half a dozen I planted late last year.
I was out of space so I started a semicircle around my AC. Just popped them
out of the pot, sat them on the ground, and emptied the contents of old flower
pots around them, creating a ridge. The soil in the pots was Miracle Grow
soil, but the soil around them was worn out top soil with no nutrients. Sprayed
a couple of times this spring with Miracle Grow but then ignored them. We
had a lot of rain and water stood in the general vicinity several times. Best
rhizomes I've grown in years. Real beauties. Now if I could just afford to
cover 2 acres with MG potting soil!!! <g>
