I would guess you would have to donate enough to cover the print run of the
individual year R&I.
Most folks who really need the most current info available are those who
would
buy the yearly R&I in the year it became available. I would assume that most
of
the sales of the yearly R&I are in the year it becomes available, and that
those sales
would be critical in recouping the cost of printing. I imagine the concern
of AIS
would be that people who had access to the electronic form would be much
less
likely to purchase the print version and that they would be left with an
expensive
inventory that was never sold.
As long as there is a demand for printed material, especially low-volume
limited
run items with a limited shelf life, you can expect a delay in release of an
electronic
version. Printing is not cheap, and I think AIS gets a good deal on their
printing.
Take a yearly R&I to you local print shop and ask them to quote a run of
say, 2500.
I seriously doubt you could get them down to 7$. And remember that 7$ covers
shipping to the storefront and postage to the purchaser's location.
Sure, there are some folks who would pay for the electronic AND the print
versions,
but not everyone. There are also those who will print the electronic version
out and
distribute copies, further diluting the possibility of recouping printing
costs. In the quantities
we are talking about, it doesnt take much to turn breakeven into loss.
