What is happening to you has happened to me. The problem with it is that
you may not be getting all the posts on a thread - to wit not getting
Arnold's message. The archives are what I used to check to see what was
incoming or not, but they are not the best way to follow an active thread
where you get some posts but not all of them. Things get out of sequence
and can be aggravating to follow. Seeing an answer without having seen the
question first can be odd. That is usually what alerted me to posts that I
was missing. In the old days, when the group was still hosted by Yahoo,
this sort of activity was then followed by all the mail being bounced. The
problem disappeared for me when iris-talk was moved off Yahoo. I don't know
how it may work here, but I think you need to get with John and see if
between the two of you a solution can be found. Otherwise you are going to
have to go to some trouble to follow and participate in threads that
interest you.

Unsolicited advice. I wish I could hybridize as easily :).
