I'd like to say a little about Ken and Christie Pierson who lost their
home to the fires in Julian, California.
Julian is a historic town in the mountains of San Diego County, best know
for Julian Apple Pies.
Ken & Christie had a beautiful home and garden, it was on the 2001 Region
15 trek, for members that attended, you will remember the trip up the
mountain in the bus until the roads got so narrow that we had to transfer
to vans to navigate the rest of the way.
Christie created an extraordinarily complex quilt that was the
centerpiece of the evening raffle.
Bill Shear wrote a article for the region newsletter about the Pierson
garden and also posted to iris-talk
a lengthy report on all the gardens:

you may remember their special fertilizer that was formulated by a
chemist:

Ken is the President of the San Diego Iris Society and a very talented
stained-glass artist and had the doors and windows done in stained glass.
He is a former test pilot and flew with Chuck Yeager.
Many of their iris are a gray-white ashy looking, but they are hoping
that the roots have survived and will grow once again into beautiful
flowers.
We here in Region 15 are collecting photographs that were taken that day,
and will be making a photo album to give them.
