Re: HYB: seeds

Patrick asked:
<Do you plant a few of each variety or do you concentrate planting the
seeds you have a lot of?>

No - I either plant them all, or store them for a lean year or until I
have questions that they might answer.

< Or do you plant the crosses you only have a few seeds from? >

Yes.

<Do any of you go through the seeds and pick out the biggest ones and
only plant them?>

No - someone early in this discussion group said that size tends to be
related more to how full the pod is - fewer seeds are usually bigger
than a lot of seeds packed into one pod. However, I've noticed that
seeds that are a lot smaller in the same cross tend to be immature.
After soaking and stratifying in the fridge, they rot.

< Do you plant some and hold the rest until you can see the results from
that cross before doing anything with the rest of the seeds?>

I plant them all, transfer seedlings from the seed pots into larger
pots, sometimes several seedlings to a large pot, then may only line out
some of the biggest seedlings from each cross to see what they look
like. If they are all similar and really bad, I may not bother to line
out the rest from that cross.
