Re: Re: HYB: ? Clarence pedigree?

Betty, with as complex as tetraploid iris genetics can get, almost anything
can carry almost anything if it is a recessive....seems I recall seeing
VICTORIA FALLS in some zonal pedigrees, but I can't say for sure.

If I remember the discussion rightly, it was said the zonal pattern is kindred
to the plicata allelic series--most likely luminata. That sticks in my memory
as one of the components of the zonal pattern.

As strongly as the zonal expression is in Ghio's TIME ZONE, the pedigree there
is fascinating. A Duke's mixture, including a lot of plicata ancestry along
with other things. The zone is as strongly expressed in the standards as in
the falls.

I don't know if Tell's UTAH VALLEY would be considered a zonal, but I suspect
it would be, and was one of the spectacular "firsts" to show the pattern to
the degree it did. The ancestry there is (Snow Flurry x C. Rees' seedling) X
Violet Grace, which was from Violet Symphony x Gloriole. The registration
data said Violet Grace had a light area in the haft, as does Victoria Falls.
I have no idea what Rees may have been using, but since Snow Flurry was one of
hers, I wouldn't be surprised if it were involved in that seedling as well as
appearing as the pod parent of Tell's seedling from which Utah Valley was
produced. Considering CONQUISTADOR's presence in SnFl's ancestry it is
interesting to note its presence also in that of SAN FRANCISCO and LOS ANGELES
as well. It would not be surprising if Snow Flurry carried a plicata
recessive. I know of no plicata seedlings directly from it however.

Lloyd Zurbrigg probably has some intelligent guesses he could make on the
ancestry of CLARENCE. At least he knows what he was growing and using at the
time. If it does actually carry I(s) dominant amoena factor, that limits the
possibilities a lot as to what may be behind it.

Not much help, I'm sure.
