Re: SPEC: Iris varbossiana Maly

Hi,

I. varbossiana (at least the ones I have) are 48 chromosome TB's, and the
plants look almost identical to 'Amas', except they are a bit taller.
Also, they are fertile. The TB's coming out of nw. Greece, s. Czech
Republic, and some areas of Turkey as "I. germanica" all seem to be the
same thing, and 'Amas' is the same type of plant. They differ from the
more southerly plants (trojana, cypriana, mesopotamica, etc.) in several
details. None of these plants fits into the strict sense of I. x
germanica very well, they are quite different things. My opinion inclines
toward lumping all the Near Eastern and se. European TB 48 chromosome
plants of this type into I. trojana, but the southern and northern are
different enough that I would hesitate. This does not include things like
I. imbricata, I. chroatica, I. junoniana, etc.

More later, after I have time to do some digging for data at home.
