I. varbossiana (at least the ones I have) are 48 chromosome TB's, and the
plants look almost identical to 'Amas', except they are a bit taller.
Also, they are fertile. [. . . .] More later, after I have time to do some
digging for data at home.

A contribution:

Nigel Service in A Guide to Species Irises, their Identification and
Cultivation, has Iris varbossiana as a synonym of I. germanica in its typical form,
with a count of 2n=24. (p. 26).

Brian Mathew, The Iris (1981), p. 37 says "This is a little known plant,
originating from Bosnia, and said by Hayek to be a variety of I. germanica."
This is the whole of his comment on the taxon.

Kohlein, Iris, p. 205, says :"Pogon Iris from Bosnia; status undetermined.
[. . . .]Grows to 30" (80 cm tall) [. . .] Sterile, according to Prodan." The
work referenced is presumptively the translation of the work of Julius
Prodon (1875- 1959), edited by Bea Warburton and published in 1970 by the Median
Iris Society as The Eupogon Iris Species, included in Kohlein's
bibliography.

Appendix D of Garden Irises, published by AIS and edited by Fitz Randolph
shows chromosome counts for the taxon: Simonet 2n=24, and Randolph 2n =48.

What is the provenance of the plant you grow under the name Iris
varbossiana?
