Hmmm....
One piece of folklore says not to set a pod on a first year plant because it
weakens the plant.
Another piece of advice says to set a pod on a bloomout to save it. Most bloomouts
are on first year plants.
If they aren't strong enough to make an increase, putting energy into making seeds
is going to help?
Conflicting advice it would seem. I agree with Mike--most first year plants have
at least a few increases
that do not bloom along with the mother which does. I have never lost a plant from
setting a pod. Maybe it happens now and then, but I think this rule is probably
more anecdotal folklore than fact.
