Night Game has been here since the move in 2003, and spring 2005 was the
only time it's bloomed. There were four or five stalks in bloom when I returned
from St. Louis convention. I don't think I tried to set pods on it, and
I've no memory of pollen problems, but I don't remember high branching either.
I have plans for the next generation, and high branching would definitely be
a problem! Hope it keeps that trait to itself!
Siblings? To be a true test, wouldn't you need to cross them with the same
pollen? And plant them under the same conditions?
I've only done a little work with siblings before this past spring. With
1502 I used four siblings in breeding in 2003. However, they were all crossed
by or to different cultivars.
1502 is (((Silverado x Immortality) X (Bridge In Time x (Feed Back x Titan's
Glory). Both seedlings were white and produced white.
1502 siblings: I found many to like in this group. Unfortunately, my
favorite was a very slow grower and wasn't used. One was very pretty, one was a
great grower, and the others used were in between.
Siblings were pollinated by Star Gate, Double Dribble, & a reblooming
seedling from the Theme Master/Another Bridge line. One pollinated DD. All of the
ones with the seedling as pod parent produced seedlings that were weak and
seedlings that were strong. I've reselects from the SG & DD seedlings. None
of the seedlings using DD as the pod parent are worth mentioning. And the
last one, the Theme Master line, had very poor germination and growth. No
keepers in the last two crosses.
The pretty 1502 seedling gave my favorite seedlings from the group, and
several rebloomers. The one that grew well (and was healthy . . . I still have
it) produced some very nice seedlings.
In 2005 I accidentally crossed two siblings with the same pollen parent!
Wasn't paying enough attention. 1812-2Re is very strong with taller stalks,
but more tailored form. 1812-32 was prettier. Both were crossed with pollen
from 1620-9. When I transplanted them this past spring the ones from 1812-2Re
were much stronger plants. The resulting plants are 2012 & 2013.
This might be the best test? But I'm caught up in looking for rebloom, good
growth, good plant habits, AND pretty faces! The ones that are afflicted
with "failure to grow" are not given special treatment. Selective breeding?
I guess so! They are simply ALLOWED to die!
For years, I only planted the strongest! In most cases I didn't see the
poor growers bloom. I'm beginning to think that was a blessing and may go back
to it! Next spring would be so much simpler!
