I would beg, borrow or steal a bunch of 1 gal. pots like they use in the nursery -- not really 1 gal. And put one rhizome per pot and wet them good. Either that or find a place where you can make a long enough row and heel them all in -- they don't have close together because they won't be there permanently. Just cover their roots well and wet them down and keep them damp until spring when you can plant them properly. One way or the other I recommend leaving them outdoors for the winter, but with their rhizomes and roots covered.

Hello everyone,

I'm in a bit of a pickle. Due to severe weed pressure and
other circumstances, I began digging my irises in September (late, I know) and
come October it was rain, rain, rain. If I can't get them back in this week
during our somewhat decent weather, what is the best way to store them? I'm
in zone5/6 in Michigan.

Cold garage? Cool basement? Help!
