And if it's too wet to dig a place to heel them in, just line them out on the ground and pile a really thick layer of potting mix/compost over the roots. Or make the potting mix be a sort of raised bed, crowd the irises together, making sure there are no air pockets, soak it down good for the same reason. Leaf/branch mulch the whole thing.
