I have a feeling that won't work, but not for reasons you might immediately realize.  I've tried transplanting Iris in early Spring.  Iris send out roots to anchor themselves early in the Fall.  Even though those Fall created roots are dead from freezing they still anchor the rhizome.  There is new growth that emerges in Spring and initiates root growth on newly emerging fans.  However this root growth leads to the rhizome not being anchored enough so when it blooms it falls over.  So digging up the anchoring system from the Fall is the main problem.

Plus, since the Iris is a rhizome, though dormant, still needs light.  Obviously, bulbs that are truly dormanmt, planted and buried do not.
