SPEC- African and Hermodactylus

Thanks to everyone who suggested ways to persuade my African irises to
flower. I think that I might develop an artificial light regime to give
them a boost.

As I mentioned in an earlier mailing, Hermodactylus tuberosus is sold in
Ottawa for planting outside. According to the nursery, the Dutch
suppliers say that it will survive, although the nursery suggests a
covering of straw to make sure. My response was to plant some outside -
they will be given a 6 inch covering of peat this weekend - and some in
doors. The ones in pots have emerged and reached 10 inches in less than
a month so they must have been waiting for the starter's pistol! No
sign of flowers yet but I am hoping that they will flower in the next
month and I can show them off to various people who drop by during the
Christmas season.

I'll report on those in the garden next April!

Ian, in Ottawa where we have a lovely mild day with a slight snow
covering.
