It is one thing to speak of rotating large plantings of iris seedlings to
alfalfa to improve the soil for a large-scale hybridizer (Schreiner's) and
quite another thing to even consider this for the home gardener.
In an agronomic setting, alfalfa is pretty easy to kill with 2,4-D and
cultivation. In a garden situation it would be a poor choice (I can't think
of a poorer choice) for a "green manure" since it is a tough perennial to
kill without herbicides, and it's unlikely that anyone would want to use
2,4-D (or other "lawn products") in this situation.
Please, if you're considering this, pay heed to all those who have expressed
concerns about the logic of this.
