I can answer this, as I have lived near Griff and planted iris seeds and
now I live near Art and plant iris seeds. My experience in Virgina was
that it gets cold sooner and it is more severe and constant. I never
had any seeds germinate in the late fall/winter, they all waited until
spring, April if I remember correctly.
Here, as you know Art, seed can germinate the entire winter. I tried
every year to plant later and later hoping to keep them from
germinating. I finally gave up and decided that it really dosen't
matter as our light frosts does them no harm. I usually wait until
Thanksgiving to plant them. I guess I better get busy. The only reason
I wait until now is that I have the time.
