I grow them here in upper middle Texas. Originally I brought them from
Austin, a warmer zone. They've done pretty well for the most part,
surviving drought and neglect at times. I grew them for a while in an old
washtub on legs, but they got overcrowded and I moved them to a difficult
bed which gets HOT sun reflected back off the house. This year they seem
to have diminished somewhat, so they may now be in decline. I guess
they've been going for about 20 years now. In the beginning there was a
lot more variety in the colors, but gradually have turned primarily to
speckled shades of orange and strawberry red (pink?). They are nice
because they bloom in mid to late July and most of August, when not much
else can withstand the heat. They haven't been picky about their growing
conditions or soil.
