Pat,
Your mention of John Ohl in connection to JUNGLE SHADOWS is interesting. I
happened to mention this iris myself in a posting to the list about "art
shades" yesterday, and in referring to the 1959 AIS Checklist (the official
registry of iris cultivars) I found it listed as registered by Sass-Graham
in 1959 and introduced by Melrose Gardens in 1960. According to the usual
conventions employed in the Checklists, I would interpret this to mean that
JUNGLE SHADOWS was hybridized by Sass, in this case no doubt Henry Sass,
and registered for him after his death by Helen Graham of El Dorado,
Kansas; the actual introduction to commerce coming from Melrose Gardens in
Stockton, California (which later was operated by Ben Hager, but at the
time was still under the supervision of Mrs. Melrose, I believe). Do you
have any additional information about John Ohl's role in this process?
