Pat,
The Walking Irises are not true Irises, but are close relatives of
them. Images of both the purple/white Walking Iris, and the Yellow Walking
Iris can be found at http://molly.hsc.unt.edu//~rbarton/Iris/NANI.html
Click on the miscellaneous Irid Photos.
The purple/white Walking Iris (Neomarica) blooms for several weeks in
the spring. The yellow Walking Iris (Trimezia fosteriana) can bloom all
year in frost free climates. Here, where winter freezes occur, it blooms
spring till the first freeze. The plants get their name because they form
babies that will root (like a Spider Plant) where they touch the ground.
Both types are tender, with the "hardier" Trimezia being able to stay
outdoors in Zone 8b.
The Trimezia Yellow Walking Irises are especially common here, and are
very popular with children because of the ease with which they can be
grown.
