Greetings,
I'm in the process of preparing my Annual Mailing and Newsletter for those
fine nurseries who sell historic irises of all sorts and I'm interested in
finding more of these so that we can bring them to the attention of the HIPS
membership and refer folks--HIPS membership and others--to them for irises
they have been looking for.
Historic irises are defined by HIPS as hybrids thirty or more years old,
bearded and beardless (20 years for JI), and historically important Iris
species. I define historically important Iris species as those which have
been instrumental to hybridizers, those which received repeated attention in
the classic literature, and those which have themselves been used as
ornamental or physic plants in the past. This pretty well includes most of
them.
There are a lot of prominent folks on this list: RVPS, Section Board Members,
AIS Board Members, Newsletter Editors, as well as HIPS members. Seems
reasonable that some of you are in a position to know about nurseries on your
turf who sell older irises. If they do, and if they ship, I would like to hear
about them, please.
Irises from the 1960's and 1970's are getting hard to find too, and I am the
only person making commercial--where to buy--referrals. They all come to me in
time. So I am interested in hearing about places with semi-antiques as well as
just historics. They don't have to list a lot of them to be significant
sources.
I am particularly interested in finding sources for older dwarfs and medians.
In the past these appeals have resulted in very few but very valuable
responses. I would appreciate your giving this matter some thought and letting
me know what you know. Respond to me privately, please, at HIPSource@aol.com,
and please know that your response is confidential so if you need to qualify
some information you can speak plainly, and I hope you will.
I thank you.
