Jan I wasn't knocking line breeding but if you get it to close at least in 
sheep, horses, rabbits etc;   If there are any genetic weakness they come
out.  Incomplete digestive tracts, bad hearts, liver, or kidneys, very
small shortend misformed ears, blindness, etc.  Even though the faults may
not be expressed in the parents when more of the genes for the faults are
paired together then you get them.  Line breeding can concentrate the good
genes but it can go the other way against you too.
