Donald,

The source of your confusion is that in the past the highest recognition
for some classes of iris was a medal (Sass Medal for IB's, Knowlton Medal
for BB's, etc.), while for other classes it was a named award
(Williamson-White Award for MTB's, Nies Award for SPU's, etc.). In order to
make the system uniform, all these Awards were converted to Medals
effective 1993 (and the Wister Medal was added for TB's, which had never
had a special Award or Medal of their own). As the named Awards were
considered to be equivalent to the Award of Merit in the classes that
already had Medals, all the previous named Award winners in the classes
that had not previously had their own medals became eligible for those
medals when they were created.

Thus, CINNAMON STICK has not won the Eric Nies Medal twice. It won the Nies
Award (equivalent to an AM) in 1990 and the Eric Nies Medal in 1995. This
is the same progression in the AIS awards hierarchy as occurred when HELLO
DARKNESS won an AM in 1996 and the Wister Medal this year.

Hope this helps sort things out for you!
