Buffering is the action of resisting changes in pH when small amounts of acid 
or base are introduced into solution.

Consider  buffered aspirin-- the buffers that are added are supposed
(at least the drug marketing people want you to believe) to protect your 
digestive tract lining from the acidic nature of the salicylic acid.
