I will have to research this to be sure, but I seem to recall that
VINICOLOR was a natural hybrid of I. fulva and I. giganticaerulea.  The
first generation cross of these two is a deep wine color.  The Abbeville
irises are or hybrid origin, but have become a stable population.  I gather
that if you were to self VINICOLOR you would get some range of colors and
forms.  Offspring of I. nelsonii selfed do not vary much.  This must be why
VINICOLOR was read out of the species ranks.

I am not really sure how settled the Louisiana species are.  I have been
reading some on this lately and I have seen assertions that there may be
two or there may be ten.  The party line is five, for now.
