Happy, Thanksgiving everyone!
Though I have a general interest and love for all irises , I am especially
fond of the species. I haven't quite figured out whether it's for their
simple beauty or just a fascination with their introduction and survival. I
have read Fritz Kohlein's "Iris" which is pretty extensive in it's detail of
the history of many, many species but it is difficult to envision some of
the patterns of iris growth in history from it.
Mr. Shear's book is excellent for hopefully promoting beginning iris-lovers
or even experienced general gardeners into the wide world of irises.
But what I really wanted to say was that I enjoyed a particular sidebar (for
lack of a better term) on Iridaceae Setosa and the theories on it's history
and migration through the ages. Anyone on the board who isn't familiar with
the amazing adaptability of this particular Iris should read it . Many of
the histories you read on irises are concentrated on localized regions and
difficult to envision their migration patterns within the context of time.
Bill Shear's sidebar accomplishes both.
In the north, it's that iris daydreaming kind of time, so it made for a good
read this time of year. I'd love to see a book someday written in that style
on the history of many irises within the context of general history.
Have a safe holiday!
