I would add a bit to the discussion of Nematodes--first, we do not have
Borers here , ( think it is too cold and dry) but we do have harmful
nematodes--some years the carrots look like many fingers, rather than one
long orange root--and in trying to get rid of them, have tried many
things--I am most interested in getting rid of them in the vege garden as
it is only a path away from an Iris bed of me 'special favorites' so do not
want the little 'n's' to invade the Iiris mound---
1. Ashed from wood stove--a physical hazard to little 'n's', not enough
ashes to change the ground to more acid (as someone else said last time I
mentioned it)
2. Good nematodes from Garden's Alive--just imagine the fight that is going
on below ground between the good 'n's' and the harmful 'n's'--so far, the
good 'n's' are winning--at least the carrots looked better this year.
Think that the good 'n's' do not survive the cold and frozen ground here,
last time I tried them, they worked for one year but not the next--
3. move the Iris mound around the yard, at least every 3 years, into new
ground--that is a good idea, but with a not too large yard, completely
landscaped and a vege garden area where the seedlings grow amongst the
veges, one cannot always move the Iris bed easily, and the number of pots
on the patio increases each year--
4. No chemicals tried yet--
If anyone has any other ideas about treating the little 'n's', please let
me know--I will gladly try most anything-- Thanks for any and all ideas
