Why not just explain that irises are impossible to identify when they
are not in bloom, and as you sell/give away plants or like to keep your
colour co-ordination correct when you transplant, after they finish
flowering, you need some form of identification. If you have in excess
of 20 or so cv's a simple label with the colour will not be of much
help. The best way of knowing what is what, is by using the cv name. I
have used this explanation myself, and it makes good sense. How often do
you hear a gardener say "I wish I had kept the name tag"?
