Re: OT-SHIPPING: shredded newspaper?

How about shredded newspaper as packing material? It's a wood product,
absorbs moisture, readily available. Comments? Does it pack down too
much? I think I've also received plants packed in crumpled newspaper,
which probably doesn't pack as badly as the shredded stuff. I confess I
haven't been paying much attention to the condition of the plants with
various packing materials, but am a compulsive recycler annoyed by the
styrofoam.

For non-commercial swaps and gifts:
Single TB rhizomes or a few small ones seem to ship fine in the small US
Priority Mail boxes or padded envelopes without any packing material, as
long as holes are punched in the box/envelope. For a non-rutabaga sized
rhizome, first class in a padded envelope is cheaper than Priority.
