Mark touches on a point that I've wondered about in his remark:

And not just consistency in temperature. How about long dry spells
suddenly broken by a long wet spell. In growing the arilbreds consistent
weather patterns seem to allow them to adapt no matter that they may
not be ideal conditions. The extreme swings seem to not allow them,
or many plants for that matter, to adapt. In regards to the arilbreds, I've
often wondered if they more success could be obtained if the weather
were simply more consistent. I'm convinced that warm to hot nighttime
temps effect a plants ability to survive. If I can provide the water and
humidity (this last not easy), tropical plants actually do better than
many desert leaning plants and I believe this is due to the warm night
temps. Nighttime temps in deserts tend to cool, tropical nights tend
to stay warm.
